A few weeks ago, a student left a lecture, put in their earphones, and started the walk back to their accommodation. Nothing unusual. No obvious danger. Just another day.
Most safety incidents don't start with a dramatic moment.
They start with small things.
A gate left open.
A phone visible through a car window.
A student walking alone while scrolling through TikTok.
Someone accepting a lift because "it's only a short distance."
The reality is that most students don't think about safety until something happens to them, a friend, or someone in their class.
And that's understandable.
When you're focused on assignments, exams, making friends, finding accommodation, and figuring out adulthood, personal safety isn't usually at the top of the list.
But maybe it should be.
Being Safe Doesn't Mean Being Scared
There's a misconception that safety awareness means living in fear.
It doesn't.
Being safety-conscious simply means paying attention to what's happening around you and making decisions that reduce unnecessary risk.
It's choosing to walk with a friend instead of alone.
It's letting someone know where you're going.
It's locking your room even if you're only leaving for five minutes.
It's trusting that uncomfortable feeling when something doesn't seem right.
These aren't major lifestyle changes.
They're habits.
And habits have a way of protecting us when we least expect it.
The Student Mindset: "It Won't Happen To Me"
Most students are naturally optimistic.
That's a good thing.
But it can also create a false sense of security.
Many people assume that safety warnings are meant for someone else.
Someone less careful.
Someone less experienced.
Someone in a different city.
Until one day they realise that theft, scams, and opportunistic crime don't discriminate.
They target moments.
Moments of distraction.
Moments of trust.
Moments of routine.
That's why awareness matters more than fear.
Your Phone Is a Tool — And a Distraction
Think about how often you look at your phone while walking.
Messages.
Music.
Maps.
Social media.
Now imagine trying to notice suspicious behaviour while your attention is focused on a screen.
The truth is that criminals often look for distracted targets because they're easier to approach and less likely to notice warning signs.
That doesn't mean you need to put your phone away completely.
It just means knowing when to look up.
Looking Out for Each Other
One of the biggest advantages students have is community.
Whether you're living in a residence, a student house, a shared apartment, or private accommodation, you are surrounded by people who can help keep each other safe.
Check in with friends.
Share locations when travelling.
Walk together after evening classes.
Speak up if something feels wrong.
A safer student community doesn't happen because of security cameras or locked gates alone.
It happens when students actively look out for one another.
Street Smart Starts With Small Choices
There is no single safety tip that guarantees protection.
Instead, safety is built through dozens of small decisions made every day.
Lock the door.
Stay aware.
Trust your instincts.
Tell someone where you're going.
Walk with a friend.
Put the phone down for a minute.
Simple choices. Big difference.
